What is a bag filter system?

Bag filter systems are a combination of an outer plastic or stainless steel housing, with a bag filter installed inside. Bag filtration uses the process of physical filtration to remove unwanted particles and contaminants from water or other liquids. . The bags have tiny holes in the material (measured in microns), and this essentially separates suspended particles or solids from the water. Bag filters trap the particles and waste in the filter, while the clean water continues to pass through. The size of the microns depends on the type of contaminants you need to filter from the water. Utilising the Aquastream bag filter for water treatment, can help to reduce silt, sand, dirt, and other solids found in water. The bag filter system is frequently used in commercial, industrial, agricultural, and municipal applications, such as:

  • Pre-filtration before UV disinfection systems
  • Mains water inlet filtration for commercial buildings and facilities
  • Removal ofcoarse particles that could cause damage to expensive equipment.
What are the advantages of using a bag filter?

Bag filter systems are a great choice where high water flow rates are required, combined with a low cost of replacement filters. Unlike other filters which require plastic support cores, bag filters rely on an internal support basket in the bag filter housing to prevent tearing of the filter media, reducing operating costs, particularly when removing bulk sediments with frequent bag filter changes. ;Bag filters are available in a wide range of micron ratings (pore sizes) which means they can be used in a wide range of applications.

Other benefits of bag filter systems for water filtration:

  • Filters large amounts of water at a time at high flow rates.
  • They are versatile and can handle a wide range of particle sizes and loads.
  • Have strong sediment, dirt, and solid matter holding capacity.
  • With a long service life bag filters will withstand a range of environmental conditions.
  • Super simple to install and easy to replace.
  • Considered one of the most cost-effective methods to filter water.
  • Bag filters are more environmentally friendly and minimise waste.

It should be noted that some models come with a small micron rating to filter out certain particles, however, they will not remove all bacteria or every chemical. You will need to include an additional water treatment system to target chemicals and bacteria.

What does a micron have to do with bag filters?

The bag filter system functions based on the concept of microfiltration, where liquids pass through the miniscule, permeable pores within the bag. A micron is short for one micrometre, and this is the unit of measurement which describes the pore size of a bag filter. One micron is a unit of length equal to one millionth of a metre, using the symbol: μm. The smaller the micron rating, the finer the particles it will remove. Filters with a low micron rating will filter more particles than a bag filter with a higher rating. To give another perspective, individual particles smaller than 30 microns are considered too small to view without a microscope. Choosing the micron of a filter bag depends on the smallest size of particle that needs to be filtered from the water. Therefore, you would have to consider the most common types of contaminants that will need to be filtered. For example, a 1 micron filter bag will be able to remove some types of bacteria and parasites, extremely fine dirt, silt, asbestos, and other particles. A 10 micron filter bag will remove some unseen particles from water, but not bacteria or viruses because they are too small. The width of a human hair is roughly 100 microns, meaning a 100 micron filter bag will capture larger dirt and silt particles. A 1000 micron filter bag can typically remove larger particles like beach sand, fertiliser, fibreglass insulation, grain dust, ground limestone, and others. This object list is not 100% precise as particle sizes can vary depending on factors such as how the products have been processed. The efficiency of each Aquastream bag filter is targeted towards specific particles that are larger than the pore size of the filter bag. The micron ratings of our filters range from 1 to 1000, which is generally considered to encompass the standard range of sediment water filtration.

What affects the efficiency of a bag filter system?

To figure out the best bag filter for water treatment depends on the type of water that needs to be filtered, as well as the kinds of contaminants (and the average particle size) to be removed. The type of water can also vary slightly depending on geographical location. To ensure the efficiency of a bag filter system take these factors into consideration, as well as the type of industry and the ultimate filtration goals.
