Laurence is a homeowner with a young family in Wagga Wagga, NSW, where the mains water is very hard, is dosed with chlorine as a disinfectant, and contains trace amounts of PFAS.
He first started looking into water filtration during renovations, when the plumbers cut into his old pipes and he saw what was inside them. Laurence has two systems working together. The DUO.2 filters the water where it comes into the house, which deals with chlorine, PFAS, sediment and taste at every tap. The softener sits alongside it and takes out the minerals that make water hard, protecting shower screens, tapware, and enabling soap to rinse off more easily. Here is Laurence’s experience in his own words.
- Water Type: Town Water
- Location: Wagga Wagga, NSW
- Filter System: Aquastream DUO.2 Whole Home Water Filter System followed by a Water Softener
Why did you decide to start filtering your water?
“Water filtration is one of those things you find out about slowly. The first thing that made me question it was the new house we moved into. We were doing renovations and we had the plumbers there cutting and replacing pipes, and you could see the state of the inside of the old ones that have had water going through them for 20 or 30 years. You can see sediment built up and that kind of thing.
I noticed it again when we had the water turned off at the mains for a couple of days. Turning it back on and running the tap, brown water came out first.
That's what started it. Then a little bit of research and you realise that water, although it's clear, can contain quite a lot of different things. Humans are 70% water. We drink a lot of it, we use a lot of it, we clean ourselves with it, we cook with it. So why not make sure you've got the best water you can have. Having a young family reinforced the need to take action.”
Aside from the discoloured water, were you having problems with hard water?
“We were. Our area is notorious for how hard the water is. You really notice it whenever you go somewhere else, you notice how soft the water is in comparison. And we'd noticed the build up around taps and sinks and shower screens. It's quite a pain to manage.”
Has the water changed since you started filtering?
“Yes. We noticed it straight away with taste. We'd always had filtered drinking water, but it was a much simpler filter as part of a fridge water dispenser, so the difference was obvious. Odour was a lot better as well, because there had always been a chlorine type smell in the shower, and the feel of the water was something we noticed very quickly too.
Something we've noticed more recently is that when we're using water to clean with, it's so much more effective.
The biggest thing is the showers. The water feels much nicer. We've got two young children and we thought it was a skin condition that young children get, but both of their skin has cleared right up since using filtered water. We're very pleased.”
